Costa Rica expands its commercial presence in Turkey

Costa Rica's Ministry of Foreign Trade opened a sales office in Turkey, the thirty-fifth one it has opened abroad to strengthen the presence of Costa Rican products in different markets throughout the world.

"We are in a second stage, entering more distant markets that have a high purchasing power or purchase high volumes, with which we have no FTAs, as we recently did in Qatar and are now doing in Turkey," said Alexander Mora, Minister of Foreign Trade.

Costa Rica has promotion offices in countries like Canada, USA, Mexico, Panama, Chile, Peru, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, China, Spain, Turkey, and the Netherlands.

Regarding Turkey, the official stressed that it was a country with a growing economy, which operated in a customs union with the countries from the European Union and that it had more than 80 million consumers who demanded quality goods and services that had added value.

According to information from the Foreign Trade Promoter (Procomer), from the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Turkey offers opportunities to export tropical fruits, such as pineapple, mango, and papaya juices, as well as foods like sauces, dressings, fruit jams, juices and concentrates, coffee, and cocoa products.

"The staff in the new office is local. They are highly specialized in foreign trade, they are bilingual, speak Spanish and Turkish and are dedicated to promotion management. This office will give crucial support so that the exporters of these sectors can achieve entering that market," said Pedro Beirute, manager of Procomer.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade said that the opening of the office in Turkey was part of a new business model, which had had a first stage in which they sent specialized personnel to each of the countries in Central America, as this area accounts for 19% of Costa Rican exports.

As part of the strategy, the Government has articulated the trade promotion between the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Procomer, the country's embassies, and the investment promotion agency Costa Rican Coalition for Development Initiatives (CINDE).

In addition, Procomer signed alliances with the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of El Salvador, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and the American Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua (AmCham).
