Thanks to the experience gained in Spain in exports, seed company Meridiem Seeds Italia introduced a pair of vine tomato hybrids:
Flamengo 64 (6-8 fruits)Flamengo 66 (4-6 fruits)
Both have a shocking-pink colour, excellent shelf-life as well as green pulpy rachis and sepals even after ripening.
Company managers said "these tomatoes are ideal for Eastern European markets (Poland and Baltic countries as well as Czech Republic, Slovakia, eastern Germany, Switzerland, Austria) and for some areas in north-east Italy. We created these two varieties to test the capabilities of Sicilian growers - we support them with new materials and get them ready to interact with foreign markets thanks to their different produce, which enables them to avoid competition."
The flesh has a high dry residue content, little placenta and a good acidity/Brix ration. They are also rather "sweet".
These varieties can also be grown in the autumn-winter cycle (res ty) and can set even during stressful temperature conditions.
The objective in the short term is to bring these tomatoes in some of the most prestigious restaurants along the Emilia Romagna coast for the "Notte Rosa" (Pink Night) event.
