Weather and strikes affects sales at Rungis market

Bad weather and social unrest have made it a bad month for fresh produce sellers at the Rungis fresh produce market. The cumulative effects of those two problems have meant fewer sales and sellers hoping things will turn around in the coming weeks.

Strike blocks the Rungis market

“It seems like every day we are on strike, and for the market we're in, it makes it difficult to sell,” said A.M.S. European's Antoine Fauger, referring to the Rungis market in Paris, France. “We sell quite a bit to restaurants, and we're also having problems there because all of the restaurants are half empty.”

Floods in Paris beginning of June

This comes at a time when France is hosting the UEFA European Championship, but even hotels aren’t full. On top of that, bad weather has kept many people out of local restaurants, as they can’t sit outside.

“It's not just some particular categories of fruit, it's consumption of all fruits and vegetables that has been affected,” Antoine said. “People say the weather will get better next week, so we hope the situation improves.”
