Great weather for New Jersey blueberries

“We just started picking and packing our Duke and Bluecrop variety blueberries on Monday and the weather’s been great,” said Bob Von Rohr of Sunny Valley. “We’re ramping up quickly and by the weekend we’ll be in full production.” The farm’s peak volumes will hit the weeks of June 20, June 27 and July 4. Very good yields are expected the week of July 11 through 17, and the season is slated to end around late July or early August.

Sunny Valley sells its blueberries under the “Jersey Fruit” & “Little Buck” organic labels. Its primary product is the 12-pint clamshell pack, but the company has diversified into other clamshells, including 18-ounce and two-pound packs. Prices have been strong so far.

“We hope it holds up well going forward,” said Von Rohr. “Prices are a little stronger than last year to start.”

Although prices can differ, consumption remains strong due to the blueberry’s antioxidant properties and overall health benefits.

“Every year it’s strong demand,” said Von Rohr. “With a full crop and plenty of labor everything’s looking positive. We will have plenty of blueberries for the Fourth of July holiday promotions.”
