Gretel Castro, of Passion Fresh:

"There is no fresher mango than that shipped by air"

The demand for mangoes shipped by air has increased in recent years, mainly due to the high quality that these offer to consumers. Although at first the impact of El NiƱo led to speculation and many producers did not apply preventive measures and there were some issues with the supply, the growth of the production can be corroborated with the results of the campaign that concluded recently, in May.

"The markets have grown considerably and the demand for mangoes shipped by air has recorded a noteworthy increase compared to the past season. We believe that this is due to the global reputation of gourmet mangoes shipped by air, quite unlike that of ready-to-eat mangoes shipped by sea. The fruit undergoes strict quality controls that justify the price paid by the consumer, and given that it is a niche product, its presentation has to be perfect," states Gretel Castro, general manager of Passion Fresh.

"We stress that we are talking about a product that ripens on the tree, not during the shipment. This marks the difference in quality and taste, as within a maximum of 4 days after the harvest they will reach the tables of consumers. Also, more than 85% of the mango production comes from small producers, who used to have very poor returns. Now we motivate them to think like entrepreneurs, to fully devote themselves to the cultivation process and to invest in improving the quality. Of course, this professionalism entails a higher price, but it also improves the quality of life of the growers and the lands. Only mangoes shipped by air generate the returns needed to reach this level," concludes Castro.
