Mexico: 70% of berries from air shipments depart from Jalisco

The governor of Jalisco, Aristotle Sandoval Diaz, said that seven out of ten air shipments of berries departed from the Miguel Hidalgo International Airport in Guadalajara.

The day that the first ton of strawberries and raspberries were shipped to the cities of Dubai and Kuwait, the governor said that Guadalajara's airport terminal had the logistics, technology, and business infrastructure to consolidate itself as the point of transfer of fresh food to the East and to some European countries.

He also stressed that Jalisco was the second largest producer of berries In Mexico, just behind Michoacan.

The berries, he said, will serve as the first link in the process of exporting Mexican agricultural to the Arabian Peninsula.

According to data from the Ministry of Rural Development (Seder), shipments of berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries) are mainly destined for the United States and Canada; although the country had opened new markets in recent years, such as China, Japan, and recently the UAE, and Kuwait.

Jalisco planted 3,080 hectares of berries for the 2015 season.

The Southeastern region of Jalisco is the most productive area in the entity, as the farmers planted 1,326 hectares of strawberries there, i.e. 42% of the total planted area.

The Southern region also plays an important role, as it accounts for 36% of the production with 1,124 hectares.
