Peru: Fresh capsicum exports to generate 27 million dollars in three years

According to the Association of Exporters (ADEX), the entry of fresh peppers and fresh chillies to the United States is expected to generate 27 million dollars in exports in the first three years and 150 million dollars by the fifth year.

After four years of negotiations, the United States approved the access of Peruvian fresh chillies and fresh peppers to its market in September 2015. National agricultural exporters will send the first shipment of fresh capsicum to the US market by the end of 2016.

"Peru's fresh capsicum export basket is still very small; however, having obtained access to the US last September opened a very important commercial window so that capsicum exports grow," said the president of ADEX, Juan Varilias.

Dry and canned capsicum
In 2015, Peru exported 271 million dollars of capsicum, i.e. 19% more than in the previous year. ADEX estimates that the sector will export $286 million dollars, i.e. 20% more than in 2015.

Even though Peru has some established markets, like the US, Spain, or Mexico, agricultural exporters are exploring new markets, including Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Chile, and France, Juan Varilias said.

Chillies and pepper (capsicum) exports totaled 72 million dollars in the first four months of 2016. Canned capsicum have the most demand, 48% of the market share, followed by dry capsicum with 47%, said Renzo Gomez, the chairman of ADEX Capsicum.

The executives stated that Peru would host the 23rd International Pepper Conference, the sector's most important meeting worldwide, from June 15 to the 17 in Trujillo.
