Beginning of tomato season Switzerland

On the first of June the tomato season was officially opened in Switzerland. And currently only Swiss grown tomatoes are available on the market. The start of the season of their second favorite vegetable (carrots being the first) coincides with the start of the availability of a wide range Swiss grown vegetables. A variety of shapes and colour brings flavour and nutrition to the plate. The season started well, and no complications, such as the heat wave last summer, are expected yet.

Tomatoes can be eaten raw or cooked, and contain vitamin C, minerals and carotene. The Swiss tomatoes are in season from April until November, but only in June is the supply sufficient to cover the entire Swiss demand. The tomato producers now offer a wide range of tomatoes, from Coeur de Boeuf to the yellow golden baby plum tomatoes, and from dark sweet to classic vine tomatoes, which are still the most purchased.

Tomatoes and carrots are the most popular vegetables 
After the carrot the tomato takes second place on the Swiss plate. The vegetables battle every year for first place, however if all tomato varieties were put together they'd easily take first place. In 2015 the consumption of regular tomatoes was 7.13 kg per person and 58,745 metric tons of tomatoes were sold. With a market share of 56.1% on average a little over half of the tomatoes came from Switzerland.
