Colombia celebrates ten years of Tomatina festival

Sutamarchan, Colombia, celebrated a new edition of the popular Tomatina festival, where both adults and children throw tomatoes at each other.

The festival, which comes from Spain and has been celebrated in this town for the past ten years, aims at boosting consumption and paying tribute to tomato producers. Needless to say, Sutamarchan stands out for its tomato crops, not only in the country but also in the continent.

The National Tomato Festival and the Great Colombian Tomatina are held for several days and include other activities related to tomato crops, such as the tomato eating competition, the heaviest tomato competition, and the tomato war; one of the most amusing activities for the local population and tourists.

However, this holiday is no stranger to criticism, especially because people use at least 30 tons of tomatoes for the tomato war, which many deem is an unnecessary waste. According to the organizers of the festival, the tomatoes used in this activity are unfit for human consumption.

Participants are asked not to wear jewellery or any items that may cause harm to another participants, and to understand that its all in good fun. At the end, firefighters hose down participants with water.
