Spain: Dumas tomato finding its place in Almeria's greenhouses

Syngenta has a variety in the Marmande-type salad tomato segment that is becoming increasingly popular in the greenhouses of Almeria, mostly because it gives very good returns to producers as well as the quality demanded by large retailers.

Growers like Natividad Romera Gómez, well known in the Nijar area for her professionalism and good handling of tomatoes, are choosing Dumas as a flagship variety. Natividad Romera runs a farm with a total of 13,000 square metres of greenhouses and has tested the Dumas this campaign. "I saw Dumas tomatoes in another greenhouse; I really liked them and last year I decided to give them a try and I think it was successful. During this campaign, I have seen that the Dumas, compared with other well-known varieties I've had, gives me less trouble, has a good quality and yields great volumes, which translates into a greater profitability."

According to Natividad, the Dumas production is very high. "This year, I've harvested a little earlier, as I prefer not to force the crops, but if I hadn't done this the forecast was to reach 13 kilos." Therefore, they have no doubts and insist on this idea: "that in the next season, I will plant the Dumas again on 9,500 metres of greenhouses, as it causes no issues and it gives me quality and a good production."

Natividad Romera's opinion was very similar to that held by the 120 producers from major Marmande tomato production areas in Almeria (La Cañada, El Alquián, San Isidro, Los Martínez, etc) who attended the Dumas tomato Open Days, organised by Syngenta on 26 May. The event's participants had the chance to check the excellent performance of the Dumas after a year with a very difficult climate. Producers saw that farms growing the Dumas enjoyed an excellent production of healthy, quality tomatoes with the right colour, size and flavour.

Dumas is a tomato that stands out by both its external quality, with an unbeatable ribbing and colour, as well as for its flavour and shelf life. The majority of fruits reach calibres ranging between M and G; it is suitable for long cycle productions for transplant in August and September, even for planting in winter and spring, achieving an excellent flowering and fruit setting during the winter, which should help increase the production. It also has resistance to viruses such as the TYLCV and the Tobacco mosaic virus, etc., making it easier to handle in integrated production.

Dumas is a true reflection of the efforts made by Syngenta in R+D+i in order to provide global solutions to the producers of each crop, but adapted to local conditions in each area. Furthermore, this tomato variety responds well to the Syngenta's commitments, described in its Good Growth Plan, which in the Iberian Peninsula is translating into more efficient crops, increased productivity, the development of new varieties, a reduction of waste and the recovery of farmlands.
