The demand is going higher than last year. The Dutch season was finished a bit earlier than usual, while the quality of the older onions in storage has been in decline, adding to the demand for new Egyptian onions.
“The demand has risen in Brazil as well, as there are huge shortages of red onions. It seems like we've started our export season right on time,” explains Shahira Fouad. “The quality of our onions is good. The red onions are perfect. We use the oval-shaped Short Day variety, which is especially grown with the European market in mind.”
The most important market for Omega Onions is the Netherlands, but other main markets are Italy, Brazil and India. The company also supplies onion to the local market, albeit of a different quality. “India is a direct competitor on the world market for onions, but at the same time this market is still large enough to accommodate our Egyptian red and golden onions,” says Shahira Fouad.
According to Shahira, one of the key factors for a healthy and profitable onion market is not to flood the market. Rather than focusing on quantity, her company aims for quality. “The Egyptian government tries to stimulate the export, but really it’s up to the exporters to maintain good quality standards. As long as we are able to do so, the next season is going to be excellent,” concludes Shahira.
