Taiwan: Irwin mangoes to go to China
The Taiwan Irwin mango variety is originated from the United States in the 1950s, and was introduced by Mr. Zheng Hanchi to Taiwan. Thanks to the help of the Taiwanese fruit grower Mr. Lin Changshan, the Irwin mangoes have become the number one mango variety in Taiwan.
The mango is characterised by a long oval shape and apple-red skin. At this moment, the Irwin mango can only be found in Taiwan. It is not yet succesfully grown in the South of China, and as such will need to be imported.
The harvest season of Taiwan Irwin mango begins in Pingtung area, and ends in Tainan. Thanks to its good tastes and look, its market price is positioned quite high. On average one Irwin mango weighs around 320 grams, and its packaging are divided generally by boxes containing 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12 pieces. In early period, the price can go up to over 300 Yuan, equal to 40 euro, per box.
The season of the Irwin mango usually ends in the middle of August. After that, supply is taken over by Australian mangoes.
