High quality, large sizes

Early start for Macedonian cherries

Warm weather in February, March and April this year has meant that the Macedonian cherry season was able to start a week earlier on the 8th of May compared with the usual start date of 15 May.

Janko Trajkov from Frutema said that the cherry quality is very high, despite seeing some damage at the end of April due to heavy storms.

"We have made an extra effort to protect our trees from diseases by ensuring their good health by supplying them with extra nutrients along with a lot of water and we have found this very effective. We are currently in the middle of the season and we are seeing great quality along with larger sizes of around 30. The brix level this year is also very high." said Janko.

It has been a very busy time for Frutema. They plan on making new investments over the next couple of years by adding new grape vineyards, growing the Red Globe and seedless varieties and after that, the expansion will also include cherry production, a new hydro-cooler and a calibration machine. Once these improvements have been completed there are also plans to cover all of their fields.

"Seedless grape varieties are relatively new to the market in Macedonia. There are not many available on the shelves so we wanted to try something new and will see how it works out after this season." said Janko.

The company plans on doubling their current total production area of 50 hectares by an additional 50 hectares within the next two years. Janko is confident that these new investments are virtually risk free. Once they have their own hydro cooler, they also feel that this will put them in a better position to branch out to other markets, such as Germany.

"Cherries are number one, everybody wants cherries. They are the first fruits in Macedonia, we started in May and everything is good. If you make sure that you are producing very good products with very good quality, the market is no problem. The only problem we do have is that there is not enough to supply the demand." said Janko.
