US(GA): Good yields for Vidalia onions

Growers of Georgia's famous Vidalia onions have reported good yields this harvest, and quality has been consistent with that from previous years. Prices are slightly lower than expected, though movement is good.

“We started the Vidalia onion season on April 25,” noted Kevin Hendrix with Hendrix Produce. “That was a little late for the crop, but that was the opening date that was set.” Along with better yields, Hendrix noted that this year's crop is on par, in terms of quality, with the benchmarks set in past years.

“Vidalia still is a brand, and people request it by name,” said Hendrix. “We compete with other kinds of onions, but we are the top onion when in season.” He expects availability to last through Labor Day, which is normal when compared to past years.
