Zespri season 2015/2016 breaks all records

The 2015/2016 season broke all records for Zespri. The New Zealand company noted the highest yield per hectare for green kiwis ever, broke volume records for both the Green and the SunGold and realised the highest yield for growers ever.

The total turnover increased by 21 percent compared to the previous season to 1.9 billion dollars. This turnover was realised with 131.6 million trays, an increase of 21 percent. The volume of New Zealand kiwis was 117 million trays, almost 22 million trays more than in the previous year. Outside of New Zealand the volume was 14.5 million trays. "New Zealand kiwi growers improve the management of the cultivation in a Psa environment. Combined with good weather last season, this resulted in a large harvest of 80.7 million trays of Green," explains Zespri director Peter McBride.

The harvest of the SunGold was 27.5 trays, on a total volume of Gold of 32.6 million trays. This made it a record year for Zespri. "With the increasing production of SunGold after the impact of Psa, the average yield of SunGold is at 8,653 trays per hectare. We are optimistic, in coming years we will see even higher yields."
The results are optimistic. Zespri is extending the area with licenses for 400 hectares of SunGold. Besides the cultivation in New Zealand, the multinational is now also investing in cultivation on the northern hemisphere. 2.3 million trays of SunGold were marketed, in a total of 3.7 million trays.

The organic cultivation also reached a new record with a yield of almost 53,000 dollars per hectare. This growth is due to the larger yield of an average of 7,373 trays. Last year the volume was an average of 5,973 trays. The Green14 is also doing well. Zespri continues to invest in marketing this early variety. The payout to the growers increased by 22 percent to 1.1 billion dollars. This made the average pay out per hectare 60,758 dollars.
