Market price higher than expected

China: Cherries escape cold weather

"Cold weather earlier in the season has affected large part of agriculture production this season. Fortunately, for cherries, the blooming period was before the cold snaps occured. Therefore the yield and quality has not been affected. Despite early expectations that the cherry price would be lower this year due to an increase in production, this has not happened. Our cherry sales have been stronger than last season's at a slightly lower price," say Mr Liu Wei of Xin Hongwei from Xiamen.

"The cherries that we planted in Yantai city are listed on the market as of April 20th, which is earlier than those from other regions. Their good sales position can be attributed to two factors: firstly, the strong reputation of Yantai cherries ensures that they can be pre-ordered before the harvest season through e-commerce platforms. Secondly, logistic services provided by Shunfeng Express ensures delivery within 24 hours. This guarantees timely delivery of our cherries, and consumers can receive our fresh and top quality cherries almost within a day after they place an order."

"Recently, cherries from other regions in China will be listed on the market after Yantai cherries. I do expect the market price to remain stable. Generally speaking, in Chinese cherry markets, 60% of cherry volumes come from Shandong province, followed by around 30% from Shaanxi province. Regarding imported cherries, American cherries are popular. However, their market share is not yet posing a threat to domestic cherries. Next to this, imported cherries need to be put in the cold storage logistic system and shipped to China after a relatively long transportation period. Therefore, the imported cherries are less fresh and more expensive compared to domestic cherries."

"Judging by the current market situation, we are looking forward to a promising market return. In the future, we aim to transform to a more green and ecological approach to our cherry plantation. Currently, our main customers are supermarkets and wholesalers of fresh produce in cities in Southern China. We hope to have more cooperation with new partners both in China and abroad to jointly develop cherry the industry."
