Outrageously Fresh line designed to invigorate snacking category

At the CPMA show last month, SunSelect featured its exclusive jar bag. “A bag that has been designed to sit on kitchen counters, desks or in lunch bags,” says Mike Reed with SunSelect. The company has the exclusivity on the bag design and is currently packing grape tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and a mix of medley tomatoes. “The majority of the jar packaging so far is in specialty tomatoes, but we also have the rights to pack items such as mini bell peppers, mini cucumbers, blueberries, grapes, cranberries and cherries,” added Reed. “We would love to see the jar bag become a mainstream item for consumers.”

Colorful design
The jar bag is part of SunSelect and Oppy’s Outrageously Fresh line. “A line that aims to drive the snacking category and we feel this unique package is a great way to do that. The design is colorful and really pops on the shelf against other products. Clam shells and top film packs are also still part of our specialty tomato line as we want to offer different merchandising options for all of our customers,” mentioned Reed.

Tomatoes are a great product for the jar bag as SunSelect grows them year-round in California, enabling consistent supplies. “Our facility in The Golden State just went up to 64 acres this past winter: 24 acres of bell peppers (red, yellow and orange) as well as a balance between tomato on the vine, cocktail tomatoes and different kinds of specialty tomatoes,” shared Reed. The company still has another 64 acres to expand in California, which is projected to happen in the next few years.
