Online grocery shopping is moving down the food chain assmaller start-ups take on the big hypermarkets in the battle to win theshopping baskets of millennials. El Grocer officially launched in January withgroceries reaching app users in Dubai in less than one hour. It is currentlyworking with 30 stores across 45 communities in Dubai and expects the app tohave penetration throughout the entire city by the end of May. QuickShop.ae isa mobile app that started in November and has more than 100 stores alreadysigned up. It teams up with the closest convenience store to your home andallows people to order various basket sizes from the weekly shop and have itdelivered within the hour. Another operator that has not­iced the increasingneed for online delivery is trolley.ae. It started four years ago in Dubai withtwo refrigerated trucks. It now has a fleet of 16 refrigerated trucks andcarries more than 90,000 products in its warehouse with expansion plans beyondthe UAE’s borders. Casino sells Big C chain in Vietnam to Central Group
Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA has agreed to sell Vietnam’s BigC grocery chain to Central Group at an enterprise value of 1 billion euros(US$1.1 billion), extending an Asian divestment program aimed at reducing theFrench retailer’s debt. Casino is to receive 920 million euros in proceeds, theSt Etienne, France-based company said in a statement yesterday. The disposalwould bring its total divestments to 4.2 billion euros, it said. The dealfollows Casino’s agreement earlier this year to sell control of Thaisupermarket chain Big C Supercenter Pcl to billionaire CharoenSirivadhanabhakdi’s TCC Holding Co for 3.1 billion euros. Carrefour To Open FAN Mallorca Shopping Centre In September
Carrefour’s property arm has announced that its biggestEuropean project to date, the FAN Mallorca Shopping centre in Palma, Spain,will open its doors this September. The news coincides with the arrival of 14new brands to the centre, which has already filled 85 per cent of its retailspace. Ahold Commences Work On New Automated DC
Dutch retail group Ahold has commenced work on a newautomated distribution centre in Zaanstad, which is expected to be completed inmid 2018. The new facility will serve the group's Albert Heijn stores, and willbe approximately 23,000 square metres in size. People here arespending more than ever at supermarkets, despite a weaker economic climate andrising competition from online grocers. According to preliminary governmentfigures, purchases from brick-and-mortar supermarket stores hit $2.3 billionlast year, nearly double the $1.2 billion in 2005.
