AU: Greenstar apples hit the shelves this week
With an expected harvest of 240,000kg or about a million individual apples this year, the Belgium-bred, but Aussie-grown Greenstar apples are a blend of a Granny Smith and a Delbarestival, making them significantly sweeter and far less tart than other green apples.
One of the most unique features of the Greenstar apple is its greater Vitamin C content as grower Nicole Giblett from Newton Bros Orchards in Western Australia explained.
“The high Vitamin C content in the Greenstars acts as an anti-browning agent so you get that crisp, good-looking apple even hours after they’ve been cut,” Giblett said.
“This element makes Greenstar not only a perfect go-to ingredient or garnish for apple recipes, but their ability to stay white means that when sliced up, they’re the perfect addition to kids’ lunchboxes, a cheeseboard or even a cocktail.”
Greenstar apple trees were first trialled in Australian soil more than 10 years ago and once proven successful, commercial plans were made to grow Greenstar apples around Australia.
There are now approximately 25 Greenstar apple growers across Australia, grown in all major states’ apple growing areas.
“We’ve seen such strong growth in the demand for our Greenstar apples since the first commercial plantings in 2007,” continued Giblett. “It’s the stand-out features of Greenstar apples – their sweeter taste and stay-white quality – that are driving this growing demand.”
“Consumers are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to apple varieties these days so it’s so humbling to see the Greenstar apples in such high demand.”
Greenstar apples are now available in limited Woolworths stores, IGA, Costco and select independent retailers.
