Mexico: Lime production to increase in May and June

According to the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), there will only be more lime available in that market in May and June.

April is considered the last month when there is an average supply before producers across the country start harvesting the largest volume of limes.

According to SAGARPA, compared to the rest of the crop year, the months of May and June yield the highest volume of lime as both account for 21.5 percent of the year's total harvest.

10.6 percent is harvested in May, 10.9 percent in June, and 8.4 percent in April, stated the agency.

Last week, Nemer Alvarez announced that, given the shortage of lime that boosted prices to 40 pesos per kilogram, 200 tons of citric were going to be distributed in Dinconsa stores in the country to stabilize prices.

The announcement will take place during a working tour in the state of Morelos that both officials will take.

Prices
Based on information gathered in three major supply centers of the country: Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara by the National Information System and Market Integration (SIIM) of the Ministry of Economy (SE) up to April 14, the Food Market of Guadalajara had the highest priced limes with seeds, as it cost 34.67 pesos per kilogram.

The minimum price it reached was 14.21 pesos per kilogram in Mexico City's Central Market.

According to the National Information System and Market Integration, the most expensive limes came from Colima while the cheapest ones came from the state of Michoacan.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that the annual per capita consumption of Mexican lime is 13.9 kilos, and that they accounted for 11.3 percent of the national fruit production.

Michoacan is the leading producing state of limes, and the municipalities of Buenavista and Apatzingan generate two thirds of this entity's lime production.
