US(CA): Good spinach supply coming from Southern California
There’s a good supply of spinach coming from the Oxnard area, noted Don Hobson of Boskovich Farms, which has specialized in growing the leafy green for over 100 years.
“We just finished up the desert last week, and spinach out of Salinas is light because of mildew and planting gaps due to rain earlier in the season,” Hobson added, “but there’s an ample spinach supply from the Oxnard area.”
Hobson has seen a year over year increase in spinach sales, from the bunch to value added categories.
“People are juicing a lot with spinach,” Hobson explained. “We see a big increase in spinach consumption the first of the year through mid-February, as people make New Year’s resolutions.”
Due to its Southern California location and the mild temperatures that come with it, Boskovich Farms has a year round production of various vegetables.
“Our growing department is always trying new varieties of spinach trails looking for that edge in taste and quality that work in our Oxnard area,” noted Hobson.
