Demand from the Northern regions

China: Start of Elizabeth melon season

"The season for Elizabeth melons start in April and runs until September. In 2015, prices were low due a general slow economic market. Last summer, prices for a crate were as low as 4 Yuan. Prices could go further down in the coming season. Production in Hebei and Shandong has increased. Peak supply will be in June, when we expect to deliver 20,000 kilo's," says Mr Ma.

"We grow our crop in Liaocheng, in Shandong province. We grow a number of melon varieties. The Elizabeth melon is one of our main varieties. This variety is very popular with consumers in the North of China. Its taste is sweet and it contains high sucrose, fructose and glucose levels. People also believe in its medicinal qualities, such as vitamin C content, minerals, irons and amino acids."

"We are expanding our operations in China. We have launched sales offices in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions. There is demand on the Northern markets and we are well suited to fill this gap. Ultimately we want to upmarket our product as well, and we are investing in new branding for some of our product lines."
