"We started with this pilot project 2 years ago testing on 10 hectares, with fantastic results. In the first harvest, from November to January, we obtained 40 tonnes of the highest quality product and this amount will be tripled in the next harvest. Currently we have 1,000 hectares of farmland, of which we are planning to use 500 for the cultivation of Tahiti limes, so we could have a very high export capacity," continues the representative of the Peruvian company.
The climatic conditions and quality of the soil make this area perfect to grow lemons and limes free from fungi and other pests, and will allow us to harvest large volumes during most of the year. "The current production plan is intended for Canada and the United States in the months of February to April, a period in which, because of the weather conditions, Mexico's productivity is reduced, which opens doors to us. For Europe, the harvest will take place from October to December, taking advantage of Brazil's low production, also because of the rains," affirms Rodríguez.
It is clear that the product will be significantly competitive against the Latin American countries currently leading the lemon and lime market: Mexico and Brazil, but Peru is still in the testing period and looking for regular customers before expanding the investment. "We have sent samples of our limes to both Germany and Asia and have passed all tests in laboratories, exceeding the quality standards required by these markets. We are currently in negotiations for a strategic alliance with a top level packer, with the aim of being able to supply a finished product," concludes the spokesperson of Industrias Agroforestales Casablanca SAC.
