Stonefruit twenty days early

"While Spain is assessing the damage caused by frost on the early varieties, Italy is hopeful as winter hasn't been particularly cold," explains agronomist Maurizio Simone.

Early peach and nectarine varieties (Early Bomba, Francoise, Big Top, etc.) are already blossoming, just like the first apricot varieties (Ninfa, Magic Cot, Mogador). The first buds can be seen even in the less early varieties such as Big Red, Pricia and Pink Cot.

"We are currently 20 days earlier than last year and we are hoping we can continue to have this advantage. Maximum temperatures in February have lowered a little, and it is still too early to make predictions for March. The rain arriving from the South enabled us to overcome the drought that affected some regions since October. We would need a little more rain but, rather than having the same problems we had in 2014, we will gladly wait until blossoming is over."

"Using bumblebees is recommended in this case, because local bees have not been seen despite the weather."

"We need to keep our fingers crossed and enjoy the early blossoming."
