US(CA): Gold Nugget mandarin variety harvest starts

A late, limited season specialty mandarin is currently being harvested out California’s San Joaquin and Ventura counties. Sunkist’s Gold Nugget variety mandarin, named for its shiny, bumpy rind, is available now.

“This year’s crop is very strong due to ideal weather conditions for citrus, a good balance of warm and cool weather along with enough rain for good size structures,” said Joan Wickham of Sunkist Growers.

Noted for their flavor and ease of eating, the popularity of this type of citrus has been steadily growing.

“We have seen impressive demand for easy-peel varieties for their convenience, and moreover, consumers are increasingly interested in specialty produce items with unique attributes,” explained Wickham.
