US(CA): Abnormal weather pushes back artichoke supplies
Unusual weather during the fall planting months has caused delays in California's artichoke production. While the market has been stabilized by supplies from Mexico, supplies from Southern California have been pushed back.
“We're really behind because of warm weather in October and November,” explained Thomas Walsh of Underwood Ranches. “As far as production goes, we're a couple of months behind, so we haven't had much of a season yet.”
Supplies out of Ventura County, where Underwood Ranches grows its artichokes, probably won't kick up until later this month. But despite the delay, the market has remained steady.
“The market is fine because there is good availability,” said Walsh. “Though it's hard to say anything with certainty because we haven't had a winter season yet.”
On February 10, prices for a carton of Globe 12s from Southern California and at border crossings with Mexico were between $20.50 and $25.55, and prices for a carton of 18s were between $23.55 and $30.55.
