US(CA): Steady spinach volumes, demand to pick up

Supplies of spinach coming out of Southern California's desert regions is steady, if a little behind schedule. Demand has been light in January, though shippers are expecting and uptick in the coming weeks.

“It's a stable market for spinach, and quality is very nice,” said Mark McBride of Coastline Family Farms. “We're a little behind where we'd like to be with the harvest, but we have good volume.” Demand was reported as light, and the price spread has been wide. On January 29, prices for a carton of bunched flat 24s were between $8.95 and $14.55.

Unexpected temperature fluctuations affected the spinach crop during the last two months of 2015, but with more stable weather, McBride believes volumes will pick up. He thinks more volume will coincide with increased demand.

“Quality and volumes are stable,” said McBride. “Prices are in the mid-teens and demand is picking up.”

Coastline Family Farms will be at this year's Southern Exposure that takes place between March 3 and 5 in Hollywood, Florida. You can find them on the show floor at booth #102.
