Blanca Martínez, of Tana S.A.

"It is currently impossible to meet all lemon demand"

The lemon campaign is developing with smaller volumes available than initially expected and prices have skyrocketed given the difficulties to supply large distributors.

"This lemon campaign has been marked by a lot of uncertainty from the beginning due to the lower production. On the one hand, this is positive, because prices are much higher than in the previous season, although on the other hand, we need the product, since demand is on the rise this year and it is impossible to meet it," explains Blanca Martínez, of Tana's marketing department. "To all this we must add that we have observed a significant growth of consumption in Europe, especially when the temperatures drop," she affirms.

With an annual volume of around 35 million kilos of citrus fruits, the Murcia-based company Tana specialises in the marketing of both fresh and processed products, from orange and lemon peel to juices and essential oils, offering a wide range of products intended for the food industry.

"We ship most of our oranges, grapefruits and lemons to foreign markets; in the latter's case, this includes both conventional and organic fruit. Our conventional citrus farms are located in Murcia, while organic lemons are grown in our plantations in Malaga."

Besides being a supplier for Mercadona, the largest supermarket chain in Spain, which accounts for all its domestic sales, Tana exports to Europe and overseas, reaching distant markets like the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. It is increasingly more committed to its organic line; a field in which Germany plays an important role.

"We've made significant investments in R&D and we plan to open new business lines soon through the brands BIOTANA for organic products and TANA for conventional products.

New grated lemon peel formats
Founded in 1955, Tana started marketing processed products only a few years later, thus becoming a pioneer in this sector in Spain.

"We process all kinds of fruits, although lemons are our flagship product. We have recently launched a new packaging format with different sorts of grated lemon peel and we'll soon start working also with oranges. We are developing this segment with new machinery and new business lines," points out Blanca Martínez.
