"Luc Bels, Bels-Best: "It will have to come from the exports"
Pear prices under pressure
Pears are not doing as well right now as they were at the start of the year. According to Luc Bels from Bels Best, in January the pear market was doing reasonably well, "Pear sales were doing well and we were getting prices that we could live with. The prices weren't high, but the costs were being covered. Now the price is under pressure, it has fallen 7 to 9 cents in a few days. Which means we are back to square one."
Not good for the sector
According to Luc, this has to do with several combining factors, "The reasons cannot be explained so easily. There are various conditions that are influencing the situation. The Russian boycott is still effecting this situation, and there is less demand from the export side. In any case, what is happening now is not good for the sector."
Luc hopes that the market will improve soon, "It will have to come from the export side. We are of course busy with new markets, but the developments take time. It will take years before really large volumes start going in that direction." In October he saw that domestic consumption was falling, but that has picked up again, "Consumption is back to normal in Belgium. And while this is great news, the export side really needs to pick up."
