Kees Havenaar (Frutas Luna):

"Too many Spanish greenhouse vegetables"

It has been a strange and difficult season for greenhouse grown vegetables in Spain, "Due to the disappearance of the Russian market and the nice weather throughout Europe, especially in Spain, there is too much supply. Companies cannot sell everything, which results in too much supply in open money, and the quality is not the best which puts pressure on the price of fresh products," says Kees Havenaar from Frutas Luna. "Even we can't get directly to the grower with our concept. The Netherlands and the U.K. are one big supermarket at the moment."

"Right now everything is quiet on the greenhouse vegetable market, "There were two good weeks during the 2015/16 season, and those two weeks were in January. Other than that, things have been difficult. Everything with the word tomato in it was and is bad. Eggplants and zucchini's are up and down products, even though we already know where most of the eggplants go. I expect a small increase in eggplants. Temperatures are lower now and that slows everything down a bit. The bell peppers really should have done better," continues Kees.

"It is difficult to say what will happen. They are waiting for temperatures to hit 0 degrees for three nights in a row and daytime temperature of 10 degrees (Celsius), and then things will get better. There are plenty of bell peppers, except for the yellow ones, and no one is in a hurry with the red ones. I think the price for the yellow bell peppers will fall and the green will increase, but not until February. The rest is difficult to predict. But there is demand for the smaller sizes for the mixes," says Kees. "There is hardly any demand, but there are always individual sales to Poland and the Czech Republic and those kinds of countries. The only product that is in demand, and that I have, are the white pointed snack peppers."
