Spain: 41,238 tonnes of bananas available in November

In November 2015, the Canary Islands shipped 25,527 tonnes of bananas to the Spanish mainland, African and Latin American exports amounted to 22,936 tonnes and re-exports reached 7,224 tonnes, so consumers in Spain had access to about 41,238 tonnes of bananas. This is 7,873 tonnes less than in the previous month, which means that the available supply dropped by 16%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas has fluctuated between a minimum of 38% and a maximum of 56%.

Over the first eleven months of the year, the Canary Islands shipped 316,374 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 206,323 tonnes and re-exports reached 67,356 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to some 455,341 tonnes. This is 3,895 tonnes more than the previous year, representing an increase in the available supply of 0.9%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas during this period ranged from a minimum of 31% to a maximum of 45%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in October were Costa Rica, with 5,590 tonnes, Costa Rica, with 4,850 tonnes and Colombia, with 3,967 tonnes. These three countries accounted for 63% of the volume. Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, with 4.8 million Euro, Costa Rica, with 2.3 million Euro, Cameroon, with 2.0 million and Colombia, with 1.9 million Euro, were the main suppliers in terms of value, totalling more than 78% of the total.
