Switzerland: Carrots more expensive, cucumbers cheaper

In 2015 the development of vegetable prices in supermarkets differentiated. While the prices of carrots increased, cucumbers became cheaper.

The entire year, according to the recent market newsletter of the Federal Office for Agriculture (BLW), the retail prices for cucumbers and lettuce were below the average price range from 2011 to 2014. The weather played a role with cucumbers, so the supply was good during the entire season. This lowered the prices. Lettuce had to deal with the strong competition of other varieties and the supply was higher than average.

The situation is different for tomatoes and carrots. These were more expensive compared to the average of previous years. They were affected by the warm and dry weather.
