Kenneth Meyer, Natural Tropic:

"Not enough avocados to meet demand"

In addition to Spanish mangos, cherimoyas, and green skin avocados, Hass avocados now have limited availability. Kenneth Meyer of Natural Tropic estimates that the supply this season will be around 30-40% lower. "It's a difficult season, in which it won't be possible to supply all of my set customers with avocados. And then there are countless other companies approaching me. I expect the season to be over early and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't make April."

"The oversupply of small sizes is a problem every year, but this year the good sizes (14-22) are extra scarce. The price for the good sizes is around 13-14 Euro from Spain, the smaller sizes go for a slightly lower amount, and even for the sub size avocados, which mainly go locally, 2 to 2.75 Euro is being paid. The growers are walking round with smiles," continues Kenneth. "The quality of the avocados is good, but Spain never really has internal quality problems with avocados."

The warm weather clearly has consequences for the avocado production. "It's still very mild weather with temperatures during the day up to 22 degrees in recent months. This could have consequences for next season too," says Kenneth. "This situation is untenable for us, as it is almost impossible to plan programmes. Our policy is to import as much as possible from countries like Colombia, Peru and Mexico to guarantee our product availability. We have now also started the imported avocados, but these volumes also aren't enough to foresee the market."
