Ukraine launches container train to China bypassing Russia

The first demonstration run of container train by the way of Ukraine -Georgia -Azerbaijan -Kazakhstan -China (via the Caspian Sea and Black Sea) was launched on January 16 from Illichivsk, declared the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine.

The route is a new direction of the "Silk Road" and the alternative, which will allow redirecting commodity traffic flows to the easterly direction, bypassing the Russian territory. It includes the ferry crossings of Black and Caspian Seas (Illichivsk-Batumi and Aliat-Aktau Port), and to become competitive in comparison with the traditional overland route, the Ministry noted.

Also, the Ministry press-service stressed that the parties agreed all technologies, accelerated delivery terms, tariff conditions, and operators of the train, for favourable launching of the container train. The approximate train set includes 20 rail cars.

Taking into account the current stoppage of cargo transit operations through the territory of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Infrastructure together with Ukrzaliznytsia will continue working on creation of the alternatives to redirect cargo flows to the easterly direction.

As a reminder, the topic on logistics development between Ukraine and the Caspian region countries will be one of the most important within frames of Caspian and Black Sea Agrarian Congress, to be held in Baku on April 12-13, 2016.
