Increased demand for lemons

The demand for citrus fruit, especially lemons, is usually very high during the winter months. Particularly citrus fruit from Spain are in high demand with German dealers. “The demand for lemons is currently quite high,” explains a German importer and wholesaler, “The dropped temperatures are good for the trade.”

Harvest volume

The volume produced in Spain went down by 23% compared to last year. “Despite the decline in production volume there are no shortages in supply,” continues the expert. The reason for the lower yield is the poor weather conditions and heat waves during the essential growing phase. Furthermore the season for Primafiori lemons will end earlier due to the unusually high temperatures. At the moment the temperature in Spain is around 20 degrees Celsius.

Prices

On average the Spanish lemons get a higher price compared to last year tells the trader. “The prices are quite reasonable. At the moment you’ll pay on the wholesale market around 20 Euro for a 15-kg crate (about 100 lemons)," says the importer.

“At the moment there are, in addition to the Spanish lemons, untreated Italian lemons with leafs available on the market,” states the expert, “Overall the demand for lemons is higher in winter than in summer. Limes are more popular then, especially in commercial kitchens.”
