UK: Cauliflower supply to dry up next week

A shortage of cauliflowers in January was predicted back in November, when the temperatures were well above average and early supply was out stripping demand and the crop being harvested was meant to be harvested in January. As feared back then the temperatures stayed unseasonable high throughout December resulting in February crop and some of March being harvested.

According to Julian Pitts, Managing Director at Veg UK, the shortage will start next week. The irony is that cold temperatures are also forecast for next week which will likely increase demand for the winter vegetable.

"Supply from France will dry up next week, but Spanish and Italian cauliflowers should be available for a price," according to Julian. "It is very frustrating that mother nature has made a very difficult season, resulting in huge wastage! Possibly resulting in growers not growing or cutting back growing Cauliflower next year!"
