"Currently, the price is low, but that always happens around Sinterklaas (Dutch national festivity at beginning of December). There is a huge price difference between the chicory in Belgian auctions (1-1.10 Euro) and the Dutch chicory (40 cents), but last week the Belgian market was the one under pressure. I blame the lower prices in the Netherlands on Sinterklaas, because during this period the Dutch are always more focused on other products. After Sinterklaas it will improve."
Reijnpack is one of the largest chicory packaging companies in the Netherlands. 95% of the chicory leaves the company already packaged, "Right now Germany and Italy are our largest markets, but recently there has also been more demand coming from Eastern Europe," says Sjan. "The quality of the chicory is good. We are now doing well in the third week of the new harvest."
