Ailimpo disagrees with the scenario that FUNCAS presented for citrus

Climate change is undoubtedly a global challenge that the whole of society has to face, specially sectors like agriculture that depend largely on variables that are not controlled by humans, such as rainfalls and temperatures.

The lime and grapefruit sectors were very surprised by the publication of an article in a magazine of FUNCAS (Foundation of Savings Banks) that, based on a climate model that the authors describe as uncertain, comes to the conclusion that the citrus production in the Spanish Levante will disappear.

Climate change is an undeniable reality, but it is a complex phenomenon both in its description and in the analysis of the multiple variables it affects. Thus, it is essential that a rigorous study describes the various possible scenarios that producers might face.

Climate change and its possible effects have been on Ailimpo's agenda for several years, as it is necessary to analyse its effects both on the supply sector (the future development of production throughout the world, the development of varieties adapted to new conditions, or modifying farming practices based on sustainable criteria) and on consumer demand (how climate change will impact consumer habits).

According to AILIMPO, the conclusions of the article are sensationalist. However, they stated, there is the need for addressing a joint strategy of rigorous analysis to enable the sector to establish a future strategy and determine the actions to follow so it can remain viable. In this line of work, AILIMPO offered FUNCAS its collaboration to work together to better understand the potential impact that climate change will have on lime and grapefruit.
