US(GA): Cucumber supplies steady despite rains
Rain in the Carolinas affected cucumber production in that region, and that put more pressure on supplies from Georgia. While overcast skies caused supplies from Georgia to dip last week, shippers have been able to supply enough cucumbers to steady the market.
“We have decent volumes for cucumbers after the rain from last week slowed production a little,” said Michael Yates of Pexco Produce Sales. “So there hasn't been a significant dip in volume.” Though there are some supplies coming from Florida, Georgia will likely be the main source of cucumbers in the Southeast through the rest of the month. Volumes from Florida will pick up later this month and continue through December, and Central American imports will increase in the winter.
Pricing has remained relatively steady for cucumbers out of Georgia. On October 6, prices for a carton of medium cucumbers from South Georgia were between $14.35 and $16.35.
“In the short term, the market will probably remain steady,” said Yates. “But the closer we get to December the more it will go up.”
