Harvest season in Shandong province

China: low prices new apples

The apple harvest is at full speed, but the current market situation is not making Chinese growers in Yantai county happy. Yantai, in Shandong province, is one of China's big apple producing counties.

Market prices have been going down. The plucking season of the Red General apple (Hong Jiang Jun) variety will end soon and prices have been lower than last year. Apples have grown less in size due to droughts in the summer and sell at lower prices. A local apple farmer comments: “Our costs haven't changed. Market prices cannot compensate our losses”.

“Some of the frozen apples harvested last year have not been sold. As a result, sellers are lowering prices. This makes a suppressed price of new apples”, comments an apple buyer.

It is too early to comment on the Red Fuji harvest, which will start later in October.
