Banana producers Martinique not worried about competition from Haiti

Banana producers in Martinique are not yet worried about competition from Haiti. Nicolas Marraud-Desgrottes, President of Banamart (Martinique’s producer group) says that he believes banana production in Haiti “is an excellent thing, because bananas create a lot of employment. As it is a country with so many difficulties, I think it is a good thing.” As for production from Haiti being a threat to Martinique’s production, the European market represents 5,600,000 tons of bananas, and it is an increasing market. However, Mr Marraud-Desgrottes says that unfair competition comes from “Dollar Bananas” which are produced under different terms, both on a social and environmental level. He explains that Haiti has the particularity of being aimed at the organic market, with special clients and different prices so they are not a threat.
