Lindert Moerdijk, MSP Uienhandel:

"First calm week in onion trade after unprecedented rush"

There are media reports this week about a lower onion export, which almost can't be fixed. Exporter Lindert Moerdijk of MSP Uienhandel was surprised. "It has been constantly abnormally busy over the last few weeks. We could have sold every onion five times. This is the first week of it being a little calmer."

"The onions being harvest now don't have the right colour to send them to destinations overseas and this is causing less power in the market. How the onions are harvested will largely determine the rest of the season. At the moment the market is searching, which shows in the strongly varying bale prices," continues the exporter.

"The quality we have is fine for the African destinations. After the Tabaski Africa will pull up again," expects Lindert. "The weekly container service by CRM CGM from Vlissingen is a boost for the entire Zeeuwse onion sector, because it makes quite a lot in pre transport. It also saves a lot of fuel, traffic and waiting."

"The lights are also green for the second half of the onion season. There is a lot going on in global onion cultivation. In one country it's wet and in the next dry. We have enough perspective!"
