“Global blueberry supply is still a bit limited at this time of year,” says Nils Goldschmidt with Terra Exports. “Harvest in the US and Canada is done and we are in a transition period.” South American countries are starting to come into production and are mostly focused on supplying the US and Europe, both whom dictate the market price for blueberries. As a result of tight supplies, prices are strong. On September 21, the USDA reported $36 for a flat of blueberries imported from Peru.
South Africa up and coming blueberry grower
At the moment, Terra sources from South Africa and Peru. “In South Africa, blueberry exports are a relatively new concept,” said Goldschmidt. The country noticed the increased demand globally and started planting blueberry bushes a few years ago. “This is the first year for them to have strong production. The quality of South Africa’s blueberries is outstanding,” added Goldschmidt.
Peru copies Chile, but better quality
Peru also has some good volumes available, but once Chile comes into production in a few weeks, volumes will boost. “In some aspects, Peru mimics Chile when it comes to fruit production. However, Peru tends to have larger fruit, which some customers prefer,” commented Goldschmidt.
Terra’s blueberries are primarily shipped to North America, Middle East and Asia. Countries of destination include Dubai, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan. “Asia just offers a lot of opportunities,” said Goldschmidt. North America is a smaller market for the company’s blueberry program.
