Mexico promotes planting of pitahaya

The Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge Angulo, said that the 600 hectares of pitahaya in the region of Chunes, in the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, were helping to create an entrepreneurial culture among the people in the region.

According to the Governor, the project to promote pitahaya crops, which was started at the beginning of his administration, has been a factor that has triggered the development of the area.

"By the end of this year, the farmers and the government will have planted 820 hectares of pitahaya. After having invested 3,150,000 pesos, the cultivation area will increase by about 200 hectares, benefiting more people and more communities," he said.

Borge Angulo said the original commitment was establishing 1,000 hectares of pitahaya crops and that they would achieve that goal next year, as they had proven it was a product with a high demand in the tourism market and with ample opportunities for integration into the international market.

He noted that the communities of Tihosuco, Tepich and San Roman, would start planting pitahaya this year because producers became aware of the potential profitability of this crop and asked to be incorporated into the pitahaya corridor.
