US approves phytosanitary protocol for entry of Peruvian pepper

The United States Government amended its regulation to import fruit and vegetables to allow the entrance of fresh Peruvian pepper (Capsicum species spp.) to the U.S. market, stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).

This is an important step to increase national agro-exports as the Peruvian peppers now have access to a country with nearly 320 million potential consumers.

The Minagri said that the access to the US would allow the country to initially place 14,000 tons of peppers in the US, which represent sales for US $35 million, in the next two years.

The Protocol, which was published on Friday in both countries, is the result of five years of coordination and technical work carried out between the Minagri (through the national service of agrarian health), and the Department of Agriculture of United States (APHIS).

The norm is that peppers must be produced according to the system of entrance of agricultural products from the United States, which regulates fruit fly pest control and technical inspections in the crop areas and packing facilities.

In addition, all shipping this product must have a phytosanitary certificate by the Senasa and an additional statement of the same technical organism indicating the load complies with US regulations on imports.

The access of Capsicum will benefit La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura, Ancash, Lima, Ica, and Arequipa; the regions that, due to their climate and fertile territory, produce this fruit for the whole country.

The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Juan Manuel Benites, met in Lima with the Undersecretary of promotion and regulatory programs of the Ministry of Agriculture of the US, Edward Avalos, and his delegation to discuss the entry of new Peruvian agricultural products to the North American market.

The head of Minagri stated that the sector's policy was to continue intensifying efforts to open new markets for the Peruvian agricultural products, which will increase agro-exports and improve the quality of life of small rural producers.
