Start of the 2015 apple harvest in Saxony

Good harvest of 89,000 metric tons of apples expected

The apples are ripe and the harvest can begin. The Saxony minister for agriculture and environment Thomas Schmidt opened the apple season at the Helene Maier Agriculture Foundation in Kreischa. The minister launched the season, at the end of August, together with Kathleen I, the 19th, newly chosen flower queen, and Gerd Kalbitz the chairman of the Saxony Fruit Association and Christoph Müller the managing director of the Helene Maier Agriculture Foundation.

The association represents the interests of farmers in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The acreage for fruit production in Saxony is about 3,961 hectares. The largest part is used for apples with 2,473 hectares, followed by sour cherries with about 505 hectares. Sweet cherries, plums, pears and berries are grown on the other hectares.

Last year the harvest reached 91,125 metric tons and this year a harvest of 89,000 metric tons of tasty apples is expected. 51 larger companies are largely responsible for the commercial fruit production in Saxony. The main production areas are the Borthener area and the Oschats area, between Dresden and Pirna and between Döbeln and Leisnig. A total area larger than 1000 hectares.
