Waiting for arrival of Mexican blackberries
Weather conditions for blackberries have not been very favorable over the last few months. “Many domestic production regions of the delicate berry were affected by heat,” says Evan Pence with Berry Fresh. “In Oregon and Washington for instance, the heat has been relentless.” Due to a tight domestic market, importers have brought in blackberries from Guatemala. The country had great production this year, but volumes from Guatemala are limited at the moment.
Due to limited availability, pricing has been steady. “Pence mentioned he expects prices to stay this way until the end of the domestic season, around late September. According to the USDA, a flat of blackberries from Oregon ran between $16 and $18 on September 2nd.
“We will welcome the start of the Mexican program with open arms,” declared Pence. Mexican blackberry supply will start at the end of September and ramp up in October.
