Partnerships and JVs allow a continuous supply

RipeNow LTD, is a UK company based in Peterborough specialised in supplying ripened mangoes, as well as other exotic fruits, for the UK retail and processing market.

Throughout the year mangoes are sourced from multiple countries to provide a year-round supply.

Commercial manager at Ripe Now, David Rieger explains that as mangoes are a 4-6 week crop many sources are required to keep a continuous supply going, "At the moment the mangoes are from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and we will soon be sourcing from Israel. At other times of the year we source from Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru, Ivory Coast and Mali."

"Some of our unique strengths are that we are heavily invested in our grower base to secure and guarantee supply, as well as being directly involved in growing and exporting mangoes so that we have more control on fruit quality in order to better service our customers requirements. Our partnership and joint venture strategy has allowed us to greatly strengthen some of the trickiest supply periods experienced during the year," according to David.

The mangoes are shipped into the UK and taken to the ripening rooms in Peterborough and Boston, where the company has 7 ripening rooms over the two site as well as cold storage and packing facilities.

After inspection the fruit is conditioned in the ripening rooms and every fruit is non destructively analysed for ripeness and internal defect before being selected and packed for processing orders on a daily basis.

The company's main customers include processors as well as a smaller percentage that goes directly to retailers.

The main varieties are Keitt and Kent, with occasionally Tommy Atkins and Palmer and other typical Israeli varieties such as Noa and Shelly.

Although there are seasonal variations, RipeNow imports on average 160-200 tonnes per week.
