"Guido Aaldering: "Our goal is to grow with the market"

Full focus on organics for independent onion processor Aaldering

Guido Aaldering started as an organic crop farmer packaging the organically grown onions in 1993. In 2005 he sold his land and completely focussed on packaging. "This makes us definitive and specialists. There are few packagers who only focus on organic onions and shallots."

Aaldering Bio Ui doesn't take up a market position. "We are an independent onion processor who works closely with growers, trade or other market parties. This is our strength. If we sold ourselves, we would compete with our clients. We communicate with both producers and buyers and if necessary we mediate to steer supply and demand. We continually have 10 to 15 parties in storage as commissioned by a grower or buyer."

We can dry, store and package products for growers and are a recognised customs bonded warehouse," says Guido, who doesn't see himself as a service supplier. "Trade companies also collaborate with us by having us package their onions. We also provide the storage and overhaul for a number of import and export companies, as well as possible repackaging of imported onions. This means that we are in business all year round."

According to the packager you can't compare it to the sorting and packaging stations for regular onions. "It's the difference between baking bread and confectionery. The organic market is such a different market, and is organised very differently. The volumes are also at a completely different level. With my conventional colleagues it's full loads at a time, whereas we are on demand," says the packager. At the moment Guido is fully active in the organic seeding onions. "The quality is generally good."

"We often take the growers entire range and this can go from high quality to lesser parties. You try and find a customer for everything," says Guido. He doesn't see the competition in the organic onions increasing. "Some come and some go. Packaging organic onions is so specialised, it's not just anyone that can do it."

The onions find their way to many different locations through the company's customers, but England, Germany, Denmark and France are the biggest buyers. Guido is optimistic about the future. "Our goal is to grow with the market in coming years. We are ready for any order from the trade."
