US(MI): Squash supplies tight

Heavy rains have affected the squash production in the state of Michigan. With similar weather conditions in other squash-producing states, supplies have been tight.

Squash crops in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio have been hit with heavy rains this season. As a result, production has been down, and for some growers, entire crops have been wiped out. With fewer growers and diminished production, supplies continue to be tight.

Despite light supplies, the market for squash out of Michigan has been steady. On August 7, prices for a carton of zucchini out of Michigan were between $12.00 and $12.85, and prices for a carton of yellow straightneck squash were between $16.00 and $18.85.

Similarly, rains in North Carolina also affected production in that state. Harvesting of squash in that state was curtailed due to rain and wet fields. On August 7, prices for a carton of zucchini out of North Carolina were between $14.00 and $16.35 for small sizes and between $12.00 and $14.35 for medium sizes. Prices for a carton of yellow straightneck squash were between $16.00 and $18.35 for small sizes and between $12.00 and $14.35 for medium sizes.
